Structural Waterproofing
Waterproofing and resin injection repairs
Creating a useable space below ground as part of a building’s structure can be a smart way of maximising its useable footprint and commercial value. A well-designed underground space can provide a multitude of uses, from vehicle parking to storage and plant rooms, and even warm and dry habitable spaces, with the aim firmly focussed on keeping the ground water out. Conversely, structures can be designed to retain water or liquids, such as swimming pools, balancing tanks or bunded areas which may also be subject to attack by chemicals stored in them.
Waterproofing Best Practice - Every Time
Key to the success of any new-build or retrofit waterproofed below ground structure is following the relevant industry guidelines, such as BS 8102 – the code of practice for protection of below ground structures against water from the ground – and applying them rigorously in both the design and construction phases.
When problems do occur, they can cause anything from a minor nuisance, such as visual cracks or damp patches, to more serious leaks that can cause flooding or water damage to other surface finishes or assets stored there and may ultimately lead to denying the convenience of that area to the building owner or their occupants.
Invariably, any minor issue tends to progress to become more serious for the building owner as time passes, as secondary problems arise. This could be the formation of inconvenient puddles of standing water, or more serious problems such as the exposure of the structural steel reinforcement to moisture and the atmosphere, which consequently allows damaging rust to form and could start to compromise the structural integrity of the building.
Experienced in Structural Waterproofing
Frescrete has a wealth of experience in applying cementitious waterproofing slurries (known as “tanking”) that mechanically or chemically bond onto substrates and can offer both breathable properties whilst enhancing protection for the steel reinforcement against chemical and moisture attacks.
This could include coatings internally to keep an underground area dry or applied as a coating to underground storage or swimming pool balancing tanks to enhance the protection offered to the steel in more aggressive chemical environments.
In addition to other concrete repair methods, where cracks have become a problem Frescrete can also provide resin crack injection technology to force hydrophobic or hydrophilic polymers deep into the micro-cracks and pores in concrete to stop leaks, seal fissures and bring areas back into use again. Key to any successful concrete repair is following the guidance laid down in the industry standard BS EN 1504, and working in collaboration with consulting engineers, to correctly diagnose the underlying causes to any problem before selecting the appropriate methods and products to effect a long-lasting repair.
