Frescrete were appointed to carry out a survey of the cast-in-situ concrete staircase at the above building. This was carried out on Friday 22nd May 2015 to ascertain the extent of concrete spalling and carry out drillings to verify the carbonation depth and Chloride Ion content. A light hammer test survey was also carried out. Carbonation depth testing revealed that in the majority of locations carbonation had reached and in some cases gone beyond the concrete cover. However, in isolated locations phenothalein tests proved that the concrete was still of high alkalinity and thereby it could be that these areas had recently been skimmed with a fairing coat/bagging mortar. Chloride Ion test results proved the Chloride Ion content was less than 0.05% which therefore does not , according to the B.R.E digest, place the structure in any form of risk from corrosion due to high Chloride Ion content.
